CITIES AS CREATIVE SPACES FOR CULTURAL TOURISM CONFERENCE
19 Kasım-21 Kasım 2009 - İSTANBUL / TÜRKİYE

Welcome to the website of Cities As Creative Spaces for Cultural Tourism Conference,

Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, 19 – 21 November 2009.

It is a great pleasure for us to invite you to CCSCT 2009, an international conference organized by Boğaziçi University, Department of Tourism Administration as an academic contribution to the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture events.

The theme of the conference is inspired by Greg Richards’ and Crispin Raymond’s idea of “Creative Tourism” and Richard Florida’s concept of “Creative Cities”, and it is based on UNESCO’s (2006) working definition of creative tourism as: “travel directed towards an engaged and authentic experience, with participative learning in the arts, heritage, or special character of a place. It provides a connection with those who reside in this place and create this living culture.” In connection with this theme, the conference has two aims:

The first one is to open the concept of cultural tourism to discussion, to understand whether the terms culture and cultural tourism need to be expanded beyond the commonly agreed borders and to envision the possible influences of this expansion on various actors (hosts, tourists, destination planners, cultural experts, educators, tourism professionals, entrepreneurs, government... etc.)

The second aim of the conference is to discuss how host cities (like Istanbul, as well as others) that harbor the entire range of cultural heritage, events and actors, can be redesigned and regenerated as creative cultural spaces using all their tangible and intangible cultural assets.

Structure of the conference

The conference will be composed of both panels and academic paper presentations, combined with various artistic manifestations that will be integrated within the conference. Panels with keynote speakers focusing on the case of Istanbul or on key international issues will be held in the mornings and the afternoons will be reserved for peer-reviewed parallel sessions of academic paper presentations on various sub-themes.

We are now accepting papers on the following tracks:

Re-defining cultural tourism: trends and innovative strategies

Rethinking and remaking cities for cultural tourism

Consumption of culture through tourism

Heritage ownership: global or local

Manifestations of culture through events

Whose city is it? Thinking about locals

Community-based tourism

City as a space for cultural encounters

Role of culture tourism in shaping perceptions about locals

Contemporary culture, living culture and tourism

Cultural tourism in the peripheral neighborhoods

Revitalizing the past through cultural tourism

Branding and imaging the cultural city

In additon to its careful attention to academic content, CCSCT conference is also designed to be socially stimulating for the participants with excellent opportunities for them to discover more about Istanbul, the European Capital of Culture of 2010

If you require any further information, please email ccsct@boun.edu.tr

We very much hope to see you here in November 2009.
